Summer is winding down and now is the perfect time for those back to school jitters to begin. Here are a few tips to help ease your child’s fears and to allow the transition from summer to the new school year flow peacefully.
Find time to take your little one shopping for a new fall wardrobe and school supplies. Your child will love getting to pick out new clothes and it’s a perfect time to spend some quality one on one time together. Picking out supplies for the classroom will get them excited for their new room and anxious to use the supplies they purchase. Some counties even offer a tax free weekend in August, so this is a perfect time to hit the stores!
If you’ve had your child on a slackened schedule over the summer, now is the time to begin getting them back on a more routine schedule. Begin waking them in the mornings around the time they will be leaving for school, so they may adjust to the time. Also allowing your child to get a good night’s rest will make things easier for your child AND for yourself.
Most schools will offer an open house/orientation day before they head back. Take advantage of this time to take your child to meet his new teacher(s), to see the new classroom, and to also drop off some supplies so that your child will not be weighed down with a heavy load on their first day. During this visit your child could potentially see some of their peers that they may have missed over the summer months thus making them anxious to get back to school and be with their friends again. No matter what, be sure to put a positive spin on the fact that school’s back in session soon!
